Good time last night, could of used a little more breeze but it beat the alternative. A couple of weeks ago someone asked about Flying Cloud. She is a Ranger 26 (PHRF non-spin rating on 207?) Couldn't catch her on the last reach but there is always next week.
A suggestion: is it possible to ask big boats that want to start with the little boats to make their intentions known? Nothing like a big boat using her leeward rights at the start in the 26- race.

Esperance LOA is 26.6. The flags read 26- and 27+. That means there is either no fleet for boats in between, or they do what they like. It seems John is choosing to go with the boats closer to his rating which is what I would do if I could. Or windjammers could invest in a flag that says 26+. But esperance has always gone with the small boats. Personally I would like to see new flags for next season. one that says 30- and one for 30+. The fleets are too uneven now. Or something of that nature anyway. Jim

On the June 30 Thursday race the J27's sailed in the small boat fleet. The results were actually still mixed. Kind of fuels the argument for splitting the fleet on handicap rather than LOA. Splitting by a bigger LOA (like 30') is probably not the answer. Consider the difference between a Catalina 34 and a Melges 32.
My opinion is that we should split the fleet at about 120 phrf (non-spin) for Thursday nights. Maybe 130.
My questions are:
1) will that help to balance the fleets again? Is there a better number?
2) how do we let people know which fleet they are in if they do not normally race and have no PHRF rating?
Let's get people talking about it and try to find some common ground so we can try it next season.

I am in total agreement.
Off hand answer to number one is yes but with a number closer to 150. Have to see what the average rating is first and count it out to voice an informed opinion.
Number two is use the ECSA base boat rating. Most boats are in there. If skipper doesnt want to join ECSA then they get base boat rating regardless of fixed prop etc. Post revised classes on website all winter. talk about them at awards dinner and put the new revised classes in big bold letters on page one of next years yearbook. Plus no one will be shy next season about informing skippers of any mistakes on the race course.
Raising the LOA is a band aid but better then nothing. Splitting by rating is a fix and another step towards better racing.

OK for the 6/30/05 race, the most even split would be 143+ and 142-. That would be 13 in one fleet and 12 in the other. Problem is it would split the J27's and Impulses. So take it from there.

My earlier post was to only help the 26- class to know who was starting with them. Esperance and any other big boat is welcome as far as I am concerned, just let me know who to look out for before the gun.

Kevin, I agree that a PHRF split would be a more sporting way to separate the 2 classes. I'll see if I can create a poll on this forum to get some input from members who don't often post here.
