Kudos to Tom Treat and the crew of Evil Monkey for winning the Spin Division at the Fayerweather/Black Rock Yacht Clubs' Regatta this weekend. Saturday's start was postponed from 1100 until Noon due to light shifting breezes associated with weak front moving through the area. Rain was intermittent. The wind shifted from S to ENE before the race; the wind climbed steadily throughout the afternoon 10 to 15 to 17+. The final downwind leg of the last race had the fleet roll'n as the wind was blown ;D
How hard was it roll'n and blown? It was so wild that Flying Cloud had to stop racing to assist in a Man Over Board (MOB). Fortunately, no one was hurt. The MOB happened at the start of the second beat of the first race. We had just dowsed the spin and set the Genny on port tack when I noticed a person holding a line in the water beside a dark hulled boat ahead of us. I asked Rex to alert Race Committee via the radio and JT kept on eye the MOB. Rex picked up the big radio below and made an announcement. We then asked Rob to use the handheld or to turn on the big radio. We came up into the wind. The other boat was attempting to pull the man up along side the lee of the starboard side (which was probably better than coming into the wind and risking rolling onto starboard). The boat fell off to starboard and we followed at a safe distance. Race Committee immediately sent a chase boat and, since it happened so close to the rounding, the assistance was on the scene in no time. The MOB was pulled along side the transom of the boat as it finished the rounding and came up into the wind. He climbed aboard and into the arms of his crewmates -- we started racing again.
The after party at FYC was rated GR8 by the FLYING CLOUD's party crew.
